Since Devilman was mentioned, I must express my love for it. The original work, the first two OVAs and Crybaby are all great. However, it sounded more like Rafferty was referring to the 70s TV anime, which I haven't seen, because it has little to do with the manga (anime at large hadn't yet gotten sufficiently dark and violent yet I think) and just never looked very good to me.
