I think it was mentioned previously that there is a time limit to the first class mage exam and its only held every few years. So if they gone with Sein first they most likely would have missed the test for that period and would be stuck in Äusserst for a few years. Also i honestly liked that they split up so unceremoniously . Sein said he would come with them till he found a clue about the whereabouts of his friend and thats what he did. Of course we as viewers of a story expect him to stay with the group regardless but i like the subversion.
