Early in the season, they brought up the coolant problem. When they discussed raiding the planet for it. Which just Implies that they already had a solution as well.

Spoilers on 86 for anyone else reading who hasn't seen the show or is watching the show. Do you remember the "walking" legion that would attach themselves to the Juggernauts and blow up? The ones that killed Daiya? Well the 86 anime didn't show it, but the Legion designed them to look humanoid (as much as they are allowed to) so humans would hesitate to shoot them. They also later in the war installed children voices inside yelling for help in order to slow down response times. It made me think of what you said the screamers were. As to why they don't just keep shooting at the Sord? I wonder if the anime/book brings up the low coolant levels as an explanation? Like if they did constant firing they wouldn't have the ability to cool their ships to prevent damage? Thus they can't continuously fire? Thanks for another reaction :)
