Well, it certainly makes the episode that I argued to be the first most impactful episode... to be that much more impactful. It really re-flavors Paul COMPLETELY from who I thought he was the first time around. I mean, you are right and I don't know if I fully came around to expressing it while trying to explain to Justin that his sexual encounters with Lilia were separate across time. That Paul is a layered individual with a really messed up past, that tried to be a good person afterwards. In my mind, I want to lean into the fact that people can change for the better and that no one is beyond redemption... it's just that rape is one of those few things that are the hardest to talk about or even imply forgiveness for. The show always does a good job of making itself real in respect of these problems and how you, the audience, have to consider them moving forwards.

2024-05-30 07:58:26 +0000 UTCSomething the anime glossed over was the fact that Lilia's seduction went on for some time before Paul eventually caved. Once Zenith found out she was pregnant, she cut Paul off from "fun times", and we know from the previous few episodes that Paul and Zenith were quite active in that regard, so being a horndog and suddenly cut off from sex probably built up some tension in him. Since it's not explained in the anime too well (and it won't spoil anything anyways), I'll further help clear up the Paul and Lilia history. As Theta said, before Paul and Zenith ever met, Paul and Lilia trained in the sword together somewhere. Paul then sexually assaulted Lilia, taking her virginity, and fled the training. We can assume that he then met up with Zenith and formed the adventuring party they were a part of. After they "retired" from adventuring to settle down, Paul got back in touch with Lilia and gave her a job as a maid. Regarding Theta missing the fact that Paul assaulted Lilia previously, I'm not surprised I didn't pick up on you not commenting about it, because back then I didn't have any idea of what type of person you are. I know now that this is *absolutely* something you'd comment on, but back then I probably just assumed you picked up on it but thought nothing about it. You'd be surprised how many reactors I've seen watching these first 4 episodes have 0 reaction to the fact that Paul practically r_ped Lilia in the past. This is why I like how characters in MT are written; They're not just generic personalities. Up to this point, Paul was a young man who loved his wife and wanted to be a good father to his kid. This episode (specifically the 'past r_pe reveal') shows that even good people can be scum. But being a scum or doing something horrible in the past doesn't mean you can't try to be a better person (which is a running theme of the show).
