I think my previous comment was worded a little more harshly than it needed to be lol, it is what is now. Can't comment on Gundam or Macross but in this case the Gaiden series is so obviously just bonus material with overall negligible importance to the main story and could end up distracting you more than anything else, therefore it's puzzling why you whould choose to make it the introduction to these characters and entire foundation of sorts, simply because this is what you've done before. These side stories were never intended to be watched first and doing so is at best unproductive. I might still be making a mountain out of a mole hill, but that's just my two cents.
