The line about Ikumi pulling Kouji along is an interesting one. Even though Kouji is our main character (or most main of our main characters), Ikumi has all the traits of a conventional protagonist--he's likable, empathic, a good pilot, always wants to do the right thing, doesn't come from money / is poor, and has some traumatic past. And in this episode, we see him essentially take on Kouji's role in the Yuki<>Kouji conflict. I suppose Ikumi's lightheartedness and strong sense of self make him feel like less of an MC, as that provides less room for an arc of personal growth. And he makes a good foil / contrast to our real MC Kouji. They're friends and both good guys, but Kouji is a slightly more negative person and has a slight inferiority complex. Separate point but there's an interesting piece of dialog by Ikumi when talking to Aoi about Kouji: "They're fortunate to even have parents"
