The reason the last government choose death was to become martyrs for the ideas of peace, to take both the hatred and inspire others. It's a really selfish thing to do and by luck it worked out in the first war. Cagalli's father kept telling her to face reality in the first series, that she needed to think smarter and more political - it was clear she didn't like it and never learned the required skills from her father. Now there is new leadership, every day reminding her that the nation was destroyed, its her fathers fault , ideas alone can't save the country - and they are right. But Cagally makes a fatal mistake not requesting help, thinking she needs to be strong as her father to take all the responsibility alone. Imagine the pressure of not having the training and experience fighting that government every day, as soon as her orb's nations idea of peace was broken, she was defeated, submissive to whatever happens, her identity gone - the identity forced on her to be a leader, ideas forced on her by her father, not by her own decision and conviction. It makes sense she agreed to the marriage, she was targeted when she was most vulnerable ,,You have to keep sacrificing for your people, that is your duty" - She was just forced to sacrifice all her beliefs for her people, no reason not to go all he way. I really like how the show makes Cagalli closed off towards Athrun at the start, Athrun is trying to open up to her but she can't handle it at that moment because she has to be strong- pushing him away - leaving her all alone with all the responsibility.

2025-02-11 04:04:36 +0000 UTCOne of the issues I have with Destiny is what is currently being done with Cagalli and the Orb government. Unfortunately it was never made very clear in Gundam Seed exactly how the Orb government made decisions, whether the Chief Representative has the final say on all matters or if decisions are made by the entire group of ministers as a whole. This ambiguity creates a problem because it is unclear if Cagalli is being badgered/manipulated into agreeing to joining Orb to the Earth Alliance or if the rest of the ministers/representatives are forcing it through over her objections. Furthermore, this also retroactively makes the prior government's decision to blow themselves up instead of leaving Orb in the Kusanagi very stupid as they should have known how the Seiran's political views contradicted Orb's ideals and that it would leave Orb vulnerable to being forced away from its principles. Also, it is unexplained why neither Unato nor Yuna had any involvement in the prior government despite being the most important members of one of the Five Great Clans (a term which is never discussed in the first season but does how up in Astray) and why they weren't present when Uzumi and the others decided to self-detonate.
