Funny thing, since you mentioned Urusei Yatsura... I went on a hunt the other day trying to remember the second anime I had ever seen, which I described to people as "A bunch of kids that fly off the edge of their town on a plane and find that it's being held up on the back of a turtle in space"... everyone kept coming back that I was talking about Discworld... when in fact, what I had seen was Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer. For some reason it had played back to back with Galaxy Express 999. But yeah, technically the second anime I'd ever watched was from Oshii. Also, tidbit, the movie came out the year after the Discwold novel did.

Well, wouldn't it be nice if I could just lay out there what the point really was. But I can't for multiple reasons, one of them being that it's not just about one thing. This show is very dense and full of meaning which encourages multiple viewings. Aside from all the commentary about the nature of stories and how they influence our lives (Inumaru yearns for the cookie-cutter romance of his dreams etc), there's the whole issue of the japanese family unit "under attack from western influences" (Maroko in her audacious dress), which the coke could be taken as a symbol of. Another layer would be what I sorta alluded to in an earlier comment, that this is what Oshii made right after Urusei Yatsura (has several of the same va's too) and it can be seen as him satirizing that absurd story even further. There's a lot to get out of Gosenzo-sama, of course it helps that I just find it incredibly enjoyable to watch as well. And this isn't a criticism of your reaction but it was a little bit funny how till the end you were still arguing about if Maroko was legit or not, which I don't know the answer either but I also don't know how you can watch the whole show and think that it matters at all. There clearly is no real answer to the initial mystery, it exists to draw you into the work and make you think about the themes. Similarly I don't think Bunmei acting in different roles implies an elaborate grift, instead it's another self referential aspect, since the whole show is in the form of a play after all. It was also amusing when you accused Inumaru of pulling a grift for food, because it reminded me of another one of Oshii's projects. A weird-ass movie from 2004 called Tachigui: The Amazing Lives of the Fast Food Grifters, which is even more obscure than Gosenzo. This was fun. Now onto the condensed movie version! /s
