You actually make a good point that the locals in that village technically *should* have known about the poisonous plants in the area. If we want to make up a plausible reason, we could just assume that the soldiers didn't want to listen to some peasants who, in their mind, were trying to kill them (I don't think any actually died, it just caused nausea and difficulty breathing). "Do sleepwalkers usually have their eyes open?" - Actually, yes! Although the person will look straight through people and not recognize them. They can often move well around familiar objects. If you talk to a person who is sleepwalking, they may partially respond or say things that do not make sense. It's actually a pretty wild condition.
