Regarding the pre-episode talk of castration (everyone's favorite subject, I'm sure), historically speaking, in Imperial China (which this show is loosely based on) castration was usually done by removing *everything*, not just the balls. And as Theta says, it is very graphic and horrible how it's done. Also, you're one of the few I've seen who actually understood right away the scene where the head lady-in-waiting drops the vase. The manga does a great job spelling out exactly the intent of the head lady-in-waiting, but the anime leaves it a bit more ambiguous by assuming the viewer gets that "family" in this conversation's context = the kidnappers who sold her. Lastly, you mentioned liking Maomao's cat motif. "Mao" is cat in Chinese, so her name is essentially Catcat.
