So the reason why there's an extra episode at the end of the HD Remaster is because they added a lot of stuff from the Final Plus OVA that extended the material of the original broadcast version of the final episode. So the reason why the Final Plus OVA exists is because the original final episode was incredibly rushed and a lot of people thought it was awful and unsatisfying, so they made an entirely separate OVA extending it out to fix it, and to add some closure to the show that didn’t originally exist. When they then made the 4 compilation movies of Destiny they used the ending from Final Plus instead of the original broadcast ending, and the final 2 episodes of the HD remaster is essentially the Final Plus OVA split into 2 episodes instead of it being a long 40 minute episode. Here are all of the additions that take place in this episode. The first change they made was adding the flashback before the opening scene and taking the scene that was originally there and adding it after the opening scene instead. The fight between Kira, Rey, Shinn, and Athrun in the first half of the episode is extended with some new animation. Durandal’s flashback and conversation with Rau is also an addition and they also added a bunch of extra fight animation in between the new Durandal scenes. Most of the scenes of mobile suits attacking the shield to Genesis is also added. One really bad issue with the original final episode is that the final fight between Kira and Rey was comprised almost entirely of recycled animation from the final fight between Kira and Rau from the final episode of SEED, and we know this because in several shots they forgot to trace over the Freedom Gundam with the Strike Freedom. They fixed that animation error, and also added some new animation to make this less obvious in the HD Remaster. To give you a better sense of how much runtime this added to the episode, the last scene of this episode was only 11 minutes into the original final episode.
