LITTLE LORE #5

What do smaller humanoids like goblins and kobolds do to seem more fearsome and intimidating in battle?

In the Realms, they mainly beat in unison on massed drums, and shriek en masse when charging. When marching to a battle or deploying on a battlefield, they make much use of banners on tall spears, waving them about. During battles, explosive mixtures are thrown into hilltop fires to produce great skyward gouts of flame or fireballs, as signals that also serve to intimidate.

In repeat engagements (battles against foes they’ve fought before), goblins and kobolds in the fore will charge with spears upon which are impaled the severed heads of individuals known to the enemy (friends, kin, and neighbors). These are used in the initial impact, then dropped so their bearers can fight more effectively with much shorter weapons.

It varies depending on what's at hand, but usually includes a pinch of smokepowder, a lot of half-dried or older manure, some birchbark or dried grass or other "quick flareup" material, and skins/bladders (stomachs of ruminants that have otherwise been cooked and eaten) full of cooking oils.

More lore please! (And thank you 😊)

Are the explosive mixtures they throw related to smokepowder? And if not, what is it made out of?
