One reason why this was significantly more gory than the regular seasons is because I don't believe this was aired on tv, rather it was sold as stand alone dvd's and streaming sites. The things that air on tv have to follow restrictions depending on the channel they're airing on.

The thing with Ilse’s notebook is it connects a certain freckle faced character to a larger part of the story. There’s no way you could’ve know Ronnie, so it’s all good, and it doesn’t impact much anyway, but the first time Ymir’s name is dropped in the show is in 2x2. I saw you told them ahead of schedule. I think the name drop timing is deliberate for that shock factor for those who’d watched Ilse’s notebook before 2x2, knowing the name has a significance, but without a face to pin it to. BUT the OVA shocks people for an entirely different reason, as it shows a Titan doing something titans haven’t done yet in the show, which happens in 2x1. It’s no spoiler, just like people are saying, but it takes the fun away from watching people react to the Beast Titan be the first to do it. To sum it up, i think the best time to watch it is between 2x1 and 2x2, but do as you wish with this information.

No one’s refuting that fact. He’s free to say anything he wants, but there are opinions which stray from just being subjective to being plan out wrong. Before people could sail the earth’s whole circumference, I couldn’t blame anyone for thinking the earth was flat. But here in 2024, believing that is ignorant and deranged. If he completes the show still thinking Erwin’s evil, it’s not a problem for us, just his. I do think Rowan’s analytical skills are on point though, when it comes to other parts of the show, so I’m confident he’ll come around. Confirmation bias is a bitch, and strikes some of us more than others.

Ye for some reason I’ve had a lot of people say to watch it after, but if you guys think it’s fine, then as a compromise we’ll watch it after 2x3 🫡

😭

Wow thanks for all the insight, I genuinely didn't realize there was this amount of detail in the manga. Might have to start reading it after this watch through of the anime.

Ralaz

Such a great episode. I never watched the OVAs, but this one is sooo good!!

What's even sadder is that Levi could have saved Furlan. During the attack, Isabel and Furlan tried to flee, but Furlan's horse was surprised by a titan (before Levi came, they were four of them) and fell on its leg. Isabel saved him by distracting the titans, which was the cause of her death. Seeing this, he gives up on fleeing and decides to face the danger, knowing full well that his equipment is damaged. It's the squad leader who saved his life by telling him to flee before being killed by the last titan. Sadly, Furlan is then captured. The worst part of all this is that he is captured seconds after Levi falls from his horse and finds Isabel's lifeless head.

Sunrise

In the manga, Levi basically raised Isabel. She was 11-12 years old when he brought her home, she saw him as a brotherly figure (hence why she calls him ''aniki'', which means big brother) and he saw as a little sister. In this OVA, Isabel just met Levi and call him ''aniki'', which is very weird (if you don't know their backstory) because honorifically, in Japan, they call aniki a man with whom they are very close to. Also, Isabel is 17-18 years old while Levi and Furlan are 25-26 years old when Erwin asks them to join the exploration battalion. The small lapse of time when we saw them together was actually 7 to 8 years. This is what makes this ending even more tragic and difficult for Levi because of how well they knew each other. As you said, it's literally like Eren losing Mikasa and Armin at the same time.

Sunrise

The way that Isabela and furlan impacted Levi soooo much, they meant so much to him and it was sad to see them be taken from him

Zamzam Yusuf

Not Biraj trying to pose like Levi in that one scene when Isabela and furlan were looking at the moon, thinks he’s slick lmaooo 😭😭😭

Even characters in the show itself act like they have this information and expect the viewer to be on board since this OVA came out before s2, it’s the first time Ive seen people saying it has spoilers of all things lol. Like it’s literally impossible to understand why some characters act the way they do in some scenes if you don’t know what happened in OVA…

Yueling

Yeah 9 times out of 10 people are on board for that ova to be watched at the same time as no regrets so it’s weird that you heard people saying it’s spoilers It’s not spoilers at all, it’s foreshadowing

Sean Carroll

Well that’s weird, there are no spoilers, there’s a big plot point in s2 you just won’t understand unless you saw the OVA prior to it. Anyways can’t wait for the s2, it only gets better from here.

Yueling

Most people mentioned spoilers so might be after s2

Ralaz

Well said!!!

Shalom Wasini

There’s a difference between misunderstanding something and blatantly throwing something out that is absolutely false. It’s absolutely easy to understand that Erwin had absolutely no relation to Isabel and furlans deaths so I don’t accept your defense

Sean Carroll

He's watching it for the first time. It's hard to understand the story and the characters with such little information. They just finished s1, he has time to change his mind about Erwin. And if he doesn't, it's not a problem. Everybody's free to like other characters more than others.

Teaa

very interesting point you guys discussed at the end. I believe that Levi does have respect/admiration for Erwins ability to turn his emotions off in the heat of battle and keep calm in all situations. Levi however while respecting that does not want it for himself, the world has naturally turned Levi more Stoic however he does allow his emotions to come out very subtly in season 1 (and very overtly in this OVA). He definitely does admire Erwin judging by the last line of the ep "This guy sees something that I cant see... Fine I will follow you Erwin Smith" So basically Levi can both see Erwin as a means to an end for the overall goal of humanitys freedom from the titans while also being able to appreciate Erwin's qualities as a man and commander at the same time.

Sean Carroll

its impossible for anyone to hate Erwin I swear haha, the man is my GOAT as well

Sean Carroll

Rowan was getting so close to understanding Erwin but then he blamed Erwin for Isabel and Furlans death and I died a little inside. Erwin was no where near them when they died, they died for multiple reasons. 1. Levi left them alone to get Erwin. 2. The rain impacted their visibility so fighting titans is extremely difficult in these conditions.

Sean Carroll

There is lore about Isabel being Eren's cousin from his mom's side. It doesn't affect story, just an interesting thing to think since you compared Levi's friends to the main trio

puremetalcore

I just realised the message Erwin gave to Levi at the end literally applied to Erwin in that very moment as well. You see Erwin pause for a moment when on his horse to look at a dead soldier on the ground which (I'm pretty sure) is Flagen (the guy who was put in charge of Levi and his friends and also Erwin's fellow friend). Erwin in that moment can't regret the decision he made to take the scouts on the expedition through the rain (resulting in loads dying) just as much as Levi can't regret the decision he made to trust his comrades. Both made a decision that resulted in the death of their comrades but both decided to follow through and give that decision meaning in their own unique way - Erwin by making sure the expedition is successful and Levi by putting his trust in Erwin. Erwin is one of my top characters in all of anime and fiction. Willing to bet ya'll (Even Rowan) are gonna worship Erwin by the end of this show since you already love him.

Jay

Idk if anyone told you already, but I would really recommend you watching the Ilse’s Notebook OVA before season 2, there’s a scene that can only be understood with the knowledge of things happening in that OVA. Great reaction as always.

Yueling

W reaction!

aphrodiziac03

It's never really clarified in the OVA but obviously we can tell that the reason Levi is so small is because of a lack of malnutrition and lack of sunlight. The underground did him wrong :sob:
