2024-11-19 19:46:00 +0000 UTCI disagree with this notion. Erwin sacrificed himself in season 2 ep 11 when he lost his arm. If the scouts didn’t go and save him Erwin was dead. He fully committed to sacrificing himself there and then.

His desire and drive is for humanity is a surface level objective that just so happens to be a side effect of his own selfish goal of proving his fathers theory, as by proving his father, that will also better humanity and learn the truth. He puts on this false notion of being "for humanity" but in reality his only real care is his "selfish delusion" as he calls it himself.

All that's left for you then is to die." In the final battle, Erwin asked Levi what he would do, what decision he'd make. He sat down and in the end, Levi made the decision for him: To give up on his dream and die. Erwin looks surprised and then relieved; relieved to not have to make the choice between his dream or humanity's victory. In the end, Erwin thanks Levi for making the choice for him, for allowing him to be freed from being a slave for his dream. At that moment, Erwin let someone else make the choice and so all that was left to do was die.
