2024-11-20 19:10:06 +0000 UTCSo the memories stuff can be kinda confusing but basically, as you guys mentioned, there is trigger things. These past couple of episodes have been narrated to us the audience through Grisha's own words, however for the characters, they are hearing all this through a mixture of reading the books, and the memories Eren has gained, which reaffirms what is said in the books, proving it is real and not just a made up story by Grisha. Why has he only got these memories now though? We know that titan shifters can see through the memories of previous users, however these memories are not always actively present, otherwise Eren, Reiner etc and all the other shifters would know the entire history of titans all the way back to Ymir Fritz, so often there is triggers that activate memories. Earlier in season 3 in the crystal cave under the chapel, Eren was touched by royal blood, Historia and Rod, and only then did all those memories of his dad slaughtering the Reiss family come to light. He always had those memories since eating his dad, they were just never "unlocked" for say as there was never a strong enough trigger. This worked not only because he was touched by royal blood, but also because he was in the crystal cave as that time, the same place where those events took place, so his sub concious recognised it and was trying to remember. Likewise now a similar thing has happened. Eren always had his dads memories of the outside world, but there was never a strong enough trigger. However now after learning about the fake king and what his dad did etc and discovering these books, his sub conscious essentially had enough information to work with to bring back these memories of his dad. That being said, there is sometimes when the memory awakening is done more for effect rather than actually making sense. For example in this episode with the letter. Realistically, touching the letter shouldn't have done anything, let alone give historia the memories of Ymir, who is not even her own predecessor or anything like that. In that moment it was done more as a means to summaries Ymir's life for the sake of the viewer as originally in the manga, Ymir's entire backstory was given now, not back in season 2 when they showed it in the anime. So yeah just note that sometimes the memories stuff can be a bit weird and not make sense. But yeah overall a confusing bunch of episodes, and there's more confusion yet to come 😂. But you'll get the hang of it eventually. Now you see why people say AOT requires a second watch to properly understand all the details. That simple show in season 1 of humans vs titans is no longer the case

I personally think it's because he's read the books and that triggered it. It's like a memory that you forgot about, but hearing a song or smelling something may make you remember it.
