But Erwin talking about all the fallen soldiers show the burden it is actually having on him. I think Erwin "evolved" in a way that he's actually showing the burden that this job has put on him- he isn't all powerful and unaffected. Armin was "evolving" in a more positive light- gaining confidence and coming up with strategies.

2024-11-17 19:23:54 +0000 UTCAmong the many intense moments in this episode, Bertholdt’s death stands out for its tragic irony. When he regains consciousness, he desperately shouts, “Guys, help!” when looking at Eren and them on the roof - a plea that seems strange given his prior acceptance of defeat and death in episode 14, moments before transforming. But this isn’t cowardice in his final moments. Like all titan shifters, Bertholdt loses short-term memory after being defeated as a Titan. Remember when Eren was defeated and taken by Reiner and Berthold and awakened on top of the trees without remembering what happened? His memories slowly surfaced before being realizing what occured. So, in Berthold's confusion, as he just awakens, he forgets the battle beforehand and sees Eren and the others as his allies. To his horror, they do nothing as he’s taken by a (random to him) titan. His plea is therefore a genuine cry for help (to him) and not a sign of cowardice as many believe. To top if off, just before his head is being split in two Bertholdt cries out for his true friends, Annie and Reiner, in that order, revealing his deepest bonds. Why cry out for Annie? She isn't near, he was already aware that she was captured. This too confirms his memory loss. He dies believing he’s been betrayed and left behind. This bitter misunderstanding underscores the tragedy of his death and the cruelty of this show.

And even to this day, the whole serum bowl is a constantly argued topic, that's how controversial it is lol. But yeah realistically there's no definitive answer for what was right or wrong. Even objectively looking at from the humanity point of view, Erwin's ultimate drive was the basement and proving his father, whereas Armin's was boundless exploration , so the ceiling was so much higher. This is one reason why many argue that actually, even objectively speaking Erwin may not have been the best choice for humanity as his drive as a leader may have extinguish and he may not perform like he used to after discovering the basement as he no longer has a sense of purpose unlike Armin, whom given time could mature into a second Erwin. Of course that is speculation, but ultimately Levi made the decision on an individual subjective basis for what Erwin would have wanted. Also, I'm not sure if you noticed, but the choice to have absolutely no music in the episode till the very end when the decision was made was so good, it really added tone and ominousness to the episode. Like even the intro there was none of, just the title faded onto the screen

Armin never was in a position where his act from the drive will determine the lives of others or fate of humanity. We can see why he hit a dead-end when he was given the commander rights. Every time he enters the battlefield, he doesnt act with his own grand agenda. Levi probably just sees the potential and wants to learn more about Armin’s dream going forward. Armin’s dream is from curiosity rather than a mystery. So it was less of “Armin’s role will end when he sees the sea” thing

Ronnie, if you think this makes sense, share this with the boys too! The debate goes on to date, but Levi did the logical choice. We have been seeing how the fuel and drive of Erwin to make solid commands with great sacrifice was actually for him (and humanity) to progress and arrive the truth—the answer for the question he asked and got his dad killed. And the basement has the most likelihood of giving him the answer to that question. Notice how they flashed back to Kenny quote? Erwin is a slave to finding this answer and that gives him “the drive”, and this drive is what stacked mountains of corpses. In a way it’s hell for Erwin. This drive is actually painful and Erwin even said he felt that it’s easier to just die sometimes. Would Erwin be able to lead the way he does without the drive, when the basement is reached? Tie it together with Levi asking Erwin what he would do after reaching the basement. Erwin said himself that he does not know until he does reach it. The “Free from hell” is actually free from being a slave to this drive. In a way Levi could not see how Erwin will lead without a dream. It’s just my interpretation so it either makes sense or helps you cope with Levi not picking Erwin. The debate is still heated to date. **a bit of SPOILERS for season 4** With this cope. I dont see the “Erwin would do X Y Z” the same way most ppl do on later arcs because we dont know how he would deal with the truth yet. So far we only see he says stuff about humanity when he talks to others and motivate the recruits. The truth is more precious to him than humanity as he said before.

2024-11-14 13:03:55 +0000 UTCArmin is the right choice, not only for the reasons shown in the show, but also because it would break Eren entirely to lose him, especially after Levi was about to give him the injection before changing his mind. There's no telling what Eren would've done if Levi had let Armin die. So they'd not only lose Armin, who ERWIN said was one of their "greatest weapons", but also two titans in one, including the Founding Titan. Also Erwin's plans usually involve massive casualties/collateral, while every one of Armin's plans is designed to risk/lose the least number of people possible.

2024-11-14 12:58:55 +0000 UTCThere's brilliant nuance in the moment of Bertholdt being eaten by Armin's titan: Initially upon waking and realising he's in the hands of a titan he panics, looks around and upon seeing the others, looks relieved that they're there - that they'll save him. Then there's the moment of realisation that he isn't a soldier, he's a warrior and that he's fought against them. That's when he starts begging for Annie and Reiner to help. This moment shows that Bertholdt was telling the truth back in Season 2 when he said it wasn't all a lie, that they truly considered them comrades. He was telling Armin the truth when he said that all of them were "precious comrades" to him. In the moments before his death, Bertholdt forgot that he wasn't a soldier, and looked to his friends for help.

2024-11-14 12:39:46 +0000 UTCThis episode has so many incredible yet understated moments in it. My favourite moment in the series is when Eren is pleading with Levi to save Armin. The line "Avenging my mum... killing the titans... the only thoughts in my head are full of hate! But he's not like that! Armin cares about more than just fighting! He has dreams!" gets me every single time. Yuki Kaji does an absolutely incredible job voice acting in this scene - there's so much genuine emotion, desperation and heartbreak in his delivery. It also shows just what has been driving Eren up to this point: Rage and hate. In a way his drive for freedom is a symptom of that hatred - it wasn't until Armin showed him that book about outside the walls that he knew he wasn't free, and that the titans were to blame. We got the shot of Eren lying in his bed as a child, glaring at the injustice of it all, thinking that he'd never forgive them for stealing his freedom. Meanwhile Armin's reaction to that book is one of wonder and curiosity, someone who just wants to see what is out there just for the sake of geting to see it, to experience it. He doesn't expect anything from it, like Erwin with the basement or Eren with his freedom. It's a pure dream without selfish intent.
