Pretty interesting when the fat guy with the mustache was talking about seeing people dying as “interesting” and wanting to watch ur enemies die while looking at us the viewer just for moments later we get to see the satisfaction of watching another person we hate get killed 🤯

Jarek

this conversation feels like watching 4 people run a race but the first 3 stop and go back to help the 4th person because they fell over

Sean Carroll

bro what... did Rowan stop school when he was 9?? What are fossil fuels

Sean Carroll

Have them take a closer look at the episode titles that show up after the intro.

These couple of episodes can be quite confusing as they're a massive info dump all at once, speaking of which, I remember one of you saying back in season 2 if Ymir's backstory was the biggest info dump episode in the series, little did they know the basement episodes were to come 😅. Generally though, you seem to have the general grasp of it, and I think Ronnie has done a great job keeping you on track, and likewise you'll understand more as you watch (which by the time of seeing this comment you probably are already further ahead). But i'll just try to iron out some misconceptions and other interesting things. An important point to note is that the ymir that we know (historias friend) has nothing to do with the original Ymir Fritz. She was just born into a cult that named her and revered her after the original founder Ymir Fritz who made the so called contract with the devil of all earth, so when addressing the ymir we know, most people refer to her as ymir freckles. Regarding the 9 titans, we've seen 8 of the 9. Eren's power that his dad orignally had, the founding titan which also resides within Eren, Colossal, Armoured, Beast, Female, Ymir freckles titan, the new luggage titan, and one more you haven't seen yet. Another thing is that the great titan war was more of a free for all, not an Eldia vs Marley kind of thing. Rather, the eldian empire back then had infighting between the many noble family's that held the 9 titans. The marleyans took advantage of this infighting to manipulate and destroy them, turning them against each other. From this they gained control of 7 of the 9 titans they mentioned, the other two being the founding titan, which the king fled with to Paradis, and the titan given to Grisha, which supposedly went missing. As Ronnie mentioned, the royal lineage has always been the "Fritz", however after entering the walls they changed their name to Reiss and went into hiding our of fear of being hunted, operating the government from the shadows whilst a fake puppet was installed in the name of Fritz. This is why it took Reiner, Annie, and Bertholdt so long to carry out their mission, because it was difficult to find the founding titan, which they eventually managed to do because Eren transformed 5 years later after the initial attack. Both the Marleyan government and the restorationists had similar yet also different objectives for the espionage of Paradis island. Both parties wanted the founding titan as that would allow them to have the upper hand (assuming they had a person of royal blood and managed to remove the first king's ideology), utilising abilities like memory wiping and the titans in the walls which are essentially the ultimate doomsday weapon to restore eldia to it's former glory, as least for the restorationists, whereas for Marley they wanted this power for global domination and to affirm their place as a global superpower. As was mentioned, they said that the global military might and technology is advancing, and the age of titans reigning supreme is coming to an end, so by attaining the founding titan, they can reassure their military power, even if their warriors are no longer fit for modern combat. Additionally, the cache of fossil fuels on Paradis gave Marley another reason to invade, as such resources would again support their military might. Some extra things, the name "Paradis" simply means paradise in German. This is quite twisted and sick calling the island where eldians get turned into mindless titans a "paradise", indicating that this is where the destiny of all Eldians lies, to become mindless titans wandering for eternity. AOT has a lot of ties to German things, well European in general, but specifically a lot of German aspects in particular. Most the characters names are German, a lot of the locations are German, the OST's are in German etc. This closely relates with the fact that the overall concept and setting of the show is based off reality, with the links to WW2 and being set in those early 1900's and all that stuff etc as we've seen this episode with many things like the armbands. The wildest thing is how your perception of the show completely changes after these couple of basement episodes, like before and after these episodes are two completely different shows pretty much. Like I don't think anyone would have guessed it gets this deep when watching back in season 1.

Uzair Ali

Fritz and Reiss are royal blood. Maybe a Fritz married a Reiss noble and took their name. Some of the Fritz got left behind.

Rena Unnie

Don't worry about it, I get what you meant (careful on youtube, they may not understand your intent). Btw, you cracked me up about Mikasa, it was just her bed hair, her hair was ruffled and showing more of her forehead, ahaha^^ that was so funny!!

Rena Unnie

Lmao I think the side eye had more to do with him knowing this exact comment thread was gonna show up.

Pheer

Honestly I think the things you're concerned about them missing get reiterated/recapped sufficiently to keep them on track going forward. Ronnie shouldn't need to nudge that much more than he already has been doing unless they get really confused.

Pheer

Yeah i raised an eyebrow for a second when he gave the guy props but after about 30 seconds I realized he was just intrigued by the little monologue about human nature because I remember being similarly intrigued by it the first time I saw it.

Pheer

I think a concise way of explaining it is that the themes and topics the character brought up were interesting to you on a philosophical level and there's nothing wrong with that. Isayama's writing is incredible and you were appreciating that fact out loud, it just so happened that the character being used to explore those ideas is objectively a massive piece of shit lol. Unfortunate, but still you did nothing wrong and I think most people will understand what you were saying.

Pheer

Agree with the audio being too low as in hard to hear the shows audio and your speech is too loud on contrast. I however disagree Ronnie should give them any more hints than he is doing, you're not supposed to instantly understand everything perfectly, and the show does clarify these points later on. If he explains everything it will take away from the shock factor of realizing things themselves. Most of us didn't have someone explaining things to us on the first watch trough, and in my opinion it is best to have a raw reaction without someone explaining everything. Slowly understanding the truth by yourself is much more rewarding, it doesn't matter if you get some points wrong at first, only things I think are good to correct is when they hear or remember something wrong.

Mahti

Nice to see he clarified. I knew he obviously didn't side with that character's actions but the way he worded it just came off wrong and it'd be painful seeing you all get hammered by the comments for smt you obviously didn't mean considering how engaged y'all are to the story. In the end no harm done :)

Jay

This episode will melt your brain…definitely need extra context after!! Such a good episode though, it literally gives you everything, you just don’t understand it yet. So glad you all stuck with it and have made it this far!!!

Artemipsyche

No problems, Rowan - I get it's easy to get sucked into the show and the episode was a massive dump of information. Thanks for clarifying things!

Hippopi

I'm saying that he was nodding along to the dude's whole speech - even Ronnie was giving him a weird side eye.

Hippopi

Dude chill out. It was hyperbole.

Hippopi

Nothing is wrong with Rowan. It's almost as if YOU assume/see the worst in people.

Titouan

No one justified anything, you are reaching hard. An evil character can also say something true or interesting, the truth is the truth no matter who says it. Pointing that out dosen't mean that we agree with that character's actions.

Titouan

You don't have to explain anything Rowan, I understood what you meant and that your intentions are good. I love your reactions and discussions and you each bring something unique to the table.

Titouan

He said he liked the guy because of only that one quote he said about peace and life. He liked ONLY that 20 second monologue and only that. Y’all are FUBARed if you think he liked that guy’s actions with grisha’s sister.

Jay

I’m sure 99% of us viewers understood where you were coming from. Obviously no one would think you’re ok with the man’s actions, but the quotes he said about peace and life had a poetic feel to it. You’re good man. Cheers

Jay

Yep this def can be badly represented in hindsight so probs best to do that, Rowan has given an explanation to what he meant in the comments :)

Ralaz

ROWAN HERE= When he lights up the cigarette and talks to grisha - I want to begin with the fact that I DEFINETELY DO NOT CONDONE OR RATE the fact he killed grisha sister and all the other fucked things he did. I think that is cooked and any resemblance at all to the German leader I DO NOT CONDONE BUT looking back now it was purely particular lines he was saying within that scene that i want to explain because once again I DO NOT condone the values of that leader. ‘Peace can be such a wonderful thing, but something about it is lacking’ ‘Losing touch with life and death perhaps?’ ‘We should live thinking this is the last day we got’ ‘That’s the proper state of mind for living things’ ‘I’m ready to accept it when that day comes for me’ ‘That’s because Ive faced this cruel world head on and deepened my understanding for it Straight after this I said ‘I don’t mind him’ - looking back that can be interpreted like I don’t mind the character which is NOT what I mean but in the moment it was me actually meaning I don’t mind those words he just spoke. Following this up he said it was educational to have his sons dogs eat grisha sister which I think is disgusting AND DO NOT MIND HIM. Then grisha says ‘do you not have any remorse?’ The leader response is ‘if something like that happened to one of my sons it would crush my heart’ ‘if only you weren’t eldians’- (in this moment it looked like he had understanding for grisha) then I said ‘I don’t mind this guy to be honest’ - that comment I can see how it came out as if I am condoning the character as a whole BUT because in the moment I am so consumed in the show this whole time I wish I had said ‘I don’t mind the words/perspective he has spoken/shown in ONLY in this scene and DEFINITELY NOT HIS ACTIONS which in the moment I was not remembering and just purely reacting on the given scene. The leader response to grisha - ’Of course I don’t feel remorse, you’re the murderers here’ ‘what were you restorationists planning to do to Marley, don’t you feel any remorse?’ - I understand in war everyone believes 2 different things and they will protect their own beliefs. Then when grisha says ‘I know the truth, its all a lie’ and the leader like scratches his head saying ‘yeah whatever’ kind of implying grisha is right and the leader was just waffling words then once again I can see the flaws in the leaders perspective and he deserved too die for all the things he has done. So once again I looked back at my reaction to this scene and I can admit it may have come across that I like the character but that is DEFINTELY DEFINTELY NOT THE CASE. It is purely that I kind of understood his perspective in some of those lines he mentioned but as a whole I DO NOT CONDONE THAT CHARACTERS VALUES AND ACTIONS IN THE SHOW AND HE DESERVED TO DIE. I feel maybe I was too consumed in the show and my words were misinterpreted and for that I take full accountably and to learn from this for next time I will try to be more cautious before I speak even if my intentions are good. Also this means a lot to me to explain this bc I do not condone him at all and since it may be potrayed that I like the character that is not true therefore I have taken this very seriously and want to apologise for any misunderstandings and hopefully you guys understand.

Ralaz

This episode is crazy...

asoo205

non spoiler 1. Only Eldians/Subjects of Ymir can turn into titans. If you inject a non Eldian a spinal fluid, nothing will happen. So it's easy to say that all titans are Eldians. 2. Everyone in the walls are Eldians. There are also Eldians in Marley (Grisha's City) where they are brainwashed into thinking they are evil and they should repent from their ancestor's sins. 3. Among the Eldians in Marley, the Marleyans pick a candidate who will turn into one of the 4 titans that they have because only Eldians can use it. They have to prove their loyalty to Marley, and be an excellent warrior in order to be picked. 4. Reiner didn't come to the walls to take fossil fuel, that's just impossible. Fossil Fuel is a cache of black liquid as large as a city underground. They came to take the only thing that makes the King of the walls a threat to the world: The Coordinate. If they have taken that, then they could freely annihilate Paradis and take their resources.

krai

Rowan probably forgot what the guy did due to the huge information dumps or he was only watching what he's seeing in the moment. Idk.

krai

This comment is for Ronnie specifically but for the sake of the YouTube edit (when this ep eventually gets uploaded) PLEASE cut the 2 instances of Rowan saying he "rates" the Seargent who killed Fay because the YT comments will never let you hear the end of it. Usually, I'm one to look at both perspectives of a character but for the Seargent, there's absolutely nothing redeeming about him. He killed Fay with 0 reason other than his hate for Eldians and he has 0 sympathy for anyone that is an Eldian. It's not a coincidence he and his actions closely resemble a certain German dictator, so justifying one would somehow mean you would justify the other too. He's just a purely evil character.

Jay

Hope they start going big brain so I won't have to interject much 😆, thanks for all your support <3

Ralaz

Alright, I think you've got a point there. And thanks for introducing the guys to this great show ❤️

Ghadir Younes

Can def bump up the audio, in terms of understanding the episode we did make an effort to go through aspects of the episode again to pick up on some things, however I don't really think you're meant to pick up and get absolutely everything right just in this episode, for example the people in Paradis all being eldians and only them being able to transform are things that are brought up again in the next few episodes and personally I don't really want to sit there and explain the entire story to them and I'd rather them just find out by watching, but if they're really off course then I'll def take your advice and try to interject more. Appreciate the comment :)

Ralaz

Just a few suggestions: - I don't know why, but I feel like the audio in these recordings is too low even on maximum volume. I don't know if you have control over this, but if you can switch it up a bit, very appreciated. - I think Ronnie should interfere and explain a bit more, because at this point it's not really spoilers, it's just that it's hard to catch everything from the first watch (and catching everything is crucial to understanding all that comes next). So Ronnie should have explained that yes, these are all Eldians (including the people inside Paradis, because the king took a portion of his people there and left the rest in the continent - it's all been said in this episode). Also, that Eldians are not just the titans, but a race of people, who all have the ability to transform into stupid titans if they get injected with spinal fluid. The rest of humanity (including Marley) can't. This episode should probably be watched twice for all first watchers 😅

Ghadir Younes

Ahhh ok that makes sense that's the fossil fuel cache ty for that, I let them know about the name change in the next few eps and they pick up on the subjects of ymir asw :)

Ralaz

Just to clear a few things up from this ep😩 during the great titan war, marley won and thats why eldians (the people wearing the armbands) are treated badly in Marley (outside the walls). The king (an eldian) retreated to paradis island (erens home etc) with a few other eldians and created the walls so that eldians can live there in peace and told the marleyans if anybody tries to attack the island then they’ll unleash titans everywhere which is why there hasn’t been an attack until reiner and bertholdt broke the walls down

Heartz04

Why was he vibing so hard with the very clearly 1940s Germany-esque SS guard? Dude was literally saying how interesting it was to feed an 8 yr old girl to his son's hunting dogs, and Rowan is all "You know, I kind of get this guy" like wtf bro

Hippopi

Reiss were originally Fritz, but basically changed their name to go into hiding. They're still the true Royal Family, but under a different name. Also the fossil fuel cache is that titan-made crystal stuff that the underground Reiss chapel was made from. It's that stuff that is turned into compressed gas which powers 3DMG. Also anyone who can turn into a titan is a Subject of Ymir. That's why Marley needed Eldians (subjects of Ymir) for their Marleyan warriors. Because Marleyans can't turn into titans.

Hippopi

What the actual fuck is wrong with Rowan?

Hippopi

bruh the guy with orange glasses should learn to relax keeps confidently saying wrong shit

Biko Otaa

1) Rod Reiss and Historia are indeed true royals. Throughout this episode we can see how Grisha mentions that they should infiltrate the walls and 'recover' the founding titan. AKA kill the King/Queen of the Walls. Grisha also mentions that they should do it quick since they found out Marley plans to do the same. Rod and his family were well aware that outside forces might one day infiltrate and try and attempt to recover the founding titan in possession by the king or queen, as a way to protect himself and their family they planted a fake royal family. If someone were indeed come to get them, they would end up killing the fake king and none would be the wiser. The true royal family in possession of the founding tital would be safe from harm since they hid their identity. Rod and his family basically ruled as kings and queens from behind the shadows. 2) To clarify: Eldia expanded so extensively that it eventually found itself without enemies or new lands to conquer. With no unifying purpose, the empire began to collapse under the weight of internal strife, devolving into civil war. Marley seized the opportunity to exploit the chaos. They claim to have subdued several of the intelligent Titans, turning them to their side, and used this advantage to bring an end to Eldia's dominance. In the aftermath, the Eldian King retreated to Paradis Island, taking many of his people with him though not all. He constructed the three massive walls to ensure a peaceful existence. To secure this peace, he erased the memories of those who followed him, ensuring no one would rise against him or attempt to reignite the conflict. As a final deterrent, the King issued a grave warning to the outside world: any attempt to disturb his peace would result in the release of the Titans hidden within the walls - millions of them - who would trample the world into ruin.
