I like how you said Canute uses “elegant violence” This hits a major theme in anime and cinema in general. Best written villains are elegant in their way. They’re also the most dangerous. They are manipulators, which is reflected by the duality of their looks and their thoughts, actions. Take Light and Canute for example (Geto works) Both are considered like prestigious individuals in their society. Both have grace and an honorable goal. They think they are doing justice in a cruel world, making the hard decision that others can’t. And they all have good reasons to do it. But they’re also merciless manipulators, getting rid of everything in their way and justifying every death as a sacrifice for a greater cause. Like Armin would say, they are willing to sacrifice things, in order to change things. But in the process they lose some of their humanity. Becoming the king who will then create a paradise on earth, that sounds a lot like becoming the god of a new world to me. The more they get close to their goal, the more ego they have. Even if they succeed, they’ll have to kill those who tries to disturb their perfect creation. So if I’d have to define them, I’d call them angels of death.
