Here is the explanation of the forest scene and light's mind-blowing master plan. In the forest Light exchanged death notes I will refer to Ryuk's notebook (Light's notebook) as DN1 and Rem's notebook (Misa's notebook) as DN2 . So after the switch Rem now has dn1 and Ryuk has dn2 Here are all the advantages that Light gains from this : 1. Rem would give the dn1 to some power hungry greedy guy as per Light's instruction, Ryuk wouldn't have done that as he doesn't take Light's side. 2. Rem would always be closer to L once he gets DN1. This would allow her to see L suspecting Misa and in turn kill him. 3. This also means she wouldn't help L. Now, the exchange was important because the DN that L gets NEEDED to be DN1 because: 4. It has all the names of the Kira victims so that L can cross check it. 5. It has the rules of the Death Note so that L can understand them as well as the fake rules that proves Light and Misa's innocence. 6. The rules will also help the temporary Kira to understand it 7. When Misa takes the ownership this time. She is able to make the eye deal because Ryuk would allow it while Rem wouldn't have. As you see the exchange of the notebook's shinigami put the pieces in the right place to make the plan work. Although the plan was risky it's genius and perfectly sets up Light to finally kill L
