The sword that Snake uses does not look like the standard viking sword, but resembles the swords we see in the Middle East region. The Vikings had already established themselves as some of the most successful slave traders of the period, and, in Miklagard, they could often ply a lucrative trade in their pounds of human flesh. Constantinople was a slavery hub with markets for the purchase and sale of slaves from around the world, from Central and East Asia – who had journeyed there on the famous Silk Roads – or from the Islamic world that stretched from North Africa to the Hindu Kush. At one point the Byzantine Emperor created an elite guard, the Varangian Guard. This elite military guard was charged with the protection of the Emperor and many Viking Warriors served in it. Snake is a former member of the Varangian Guard and Miklagard warrior.

2025-03-10 15:00:42 +0000 UTCThe beauty of this episode is that the grief of both Gardar's/Arnheid's story is not only true for them, but for every other man & woman who'd experienced the same fate as either of them in our world too. It really shows that if this is just a single tragedy of 1 family, imagine the pain of the other stories of the victims of war (aka the slaves) who we never even hear about. It really puts into perspective the atrocity of war and murder especially during this period of human history. Idk about anyone else but I was bawling towards the end of the ep because they depicted everything so exceptionally well, and all I could think about was if this is how many tears I was shedding at a fictional story, imagine how many tears need to be shed for the people in human history, both past and present, who've gone through the same or even worse. Personally, another one of the best episodes of anime/TV I've ever watched.
