A big reason why Takeda needed to die by burning is because Light needed to cover up the fact Mello died of a heart attack. If the task force found Mello's dead body, they would need to explain how he died, and if it was determined that the death note killed him, it would need to be explained how Kiyomi found out Mello's name, which only Near and the Task Force knew. There was also a very big risk that if it was discovered Takeda had access to death note pages, Light's plan with the fake notebook would be uncovered.
