I appreciate your guys’ take on The Great Divide, cuz people always say it’s the worst episode, but when we were watching them on TV growing up, we didn’t necessarily get to see the whole thing in order. So your chronological perspective of it showing Aang’s growth into practicing becoming a leader—like it’s the first time in this episode that you see him take charge to this extent—is actually interesting from a narrative perspective. Makes me appreciate the mastercraft of storytelling the Avatar creators possessed (which sadly dies in things like Arcane season 2, our most recent hope for another story as good as ATLA).

2025-06-13 04:44:18 +0000 UTCThere is no creature on earth half so terrifying as a truly just man. - Varys The Jet episode shows how well the creators and showrunner/writers respected its audience (in spite of what we know to be true, kids are its primary audience). They did not pander with the rigid black/white good/evil narrative. They wanted their young audience to see that evil can come from the purest intention; that the tortured can become torturers. Katara repeating "Jet wouldn't do that" is so powerful in that it shows the dissonance she experienced trying to reconcile her image of who Jet is vs who Jet really is. 👌

2025-06-04 02:18:17 +0000 UTCIn Jet’s episode, I always struggled with how quickly Katara trusted him, but upon re-watching it so many times I understand that it was to teach Katara, who is upfront a trusting and hopeful person, that she can’t immediately trust everyone that she meets even though it’s in her inclination to do so because she tries to see the good before the bad. So I try to have empathy for her in this episode, even though it’s kind of annoying how she fawns over Jet. Had to subscribe these are some of the best avatar reactions and breakdowns I’ve seen!

It's beyond what is a kids show and brings up serious adult issues and struggles, and it doesn't spoon feed the audience. Rather it presents the situation and shows a problem/solution that could not be the best answer, then lets you sit with it. Watching these characters grow is going to be so fun for you guys! Fans all agree this is no kids show :)
