The activity on Greenworth Trade Street acted as white noise while Zac worked on the figurine in his hands. He was sitting in the shade by his storeās entrance, which had become a common occurrence. Anytime Zac wasnāt working on a commission or private project, he liked having the city noise wash over him. Sometimes, heād take his carving kit to another part of Whitfall. The store didnāt need watching ever since he changed opening hours to appointment only.
The clamor followed a set of patterns. Zac knew that the old cobbler across the street would emerge to smoke his pipe and watch the clouds in around five minutes. Ten minutes later, the hawkers selling lunches from rolling carts would descend on trade street with near-military precision. Every day was a life.
It began with merchants getting things ready at the crack of dawn. It ended long after sundown with family businesses preparing for tomorrow under candlelight. One by one, the lights would go out in the night until darkness reigned. Each day, the wheel turned, moving forward yet standing still.
There was some chaos hidden in the order. Thereād be a few new faces every day, each introducing unique variations to the familiar scenes. Like Zac, they became agents of change, though few were fated to elicit anything but small, temporary ripples. The creak from Zacās left was another variable. Looking over, Zac saw Beene and Helisent emerge and hang the closed sign on their door.
It was spring, and the two rarely had the time to take a walk in the middle of the day. If they werenāt busy managing the shop, they were in the countryside negotiating with farmers or overseeing their plant nursery.
The slightly hunched-over seed salesman was a stark reminder of another agent of changeātime and its unrelenting march forward. Beeneās back had grown somewhat stooped, and his graying hairline had receded all the way to the back of his head. While only fifty-five, life had left an intense mark on Beene Peck. His recent change of fortune couldnāt undo decades of stress and malnutrition.
Zac had also come to understand that the lower density of Cosmic Energy wasnāt the only reason for the low cultivation in the shallows. There was significantly more Earthly Taint, which made progress nearly impossible. Even for mortals like Beene, it was like living in a city covered in smog.
If Beene represented lifeās decline, then Helisent was a flower in bloom. The inquisitive child had grown into a graceful woman, though the life of a celestial goddess wasnāt for her. Zac had long since confirmed she wasnāt fated with the Dao. A mortal by the Systemās standards and without its assistance, Helisent would need a decade of hard work to reach level five.
Practicing one of the top-tier manuals in Everitās memories wouldnāt make a difference, and sacrificing a significant chunk of her life for such meager gains simply wasnāt worth it. Not that Helisent had expected anything. Working-class children in these mortal cities grew up quickly. There was no time to dream about cultivation when they needed to help the family.
The curious yearning Zac had seen in Helisentās eyes when he shared morsels of knowledge from the cultivation world had been replaced by steady responsibility. Her older sister had moved out shortly before Zac arrived to live with her husband, and it came upon Helisent to take over the budding seed empire. Beene once confided in Zac it wasnāt the original plan. Heād planned to sell the shop and retire on his modest savings after Helisent followed in her sisterās footsteps.
Timeās passage was far more noticeable in the mortal realm compared to what Zac had grown accustomed to. The lifespan of those in his surroundings had skyrocketed since the integration, but he hadnāt realized how his vantage had changed with it. In many ways, he felt like the same person as before the integration.
Mortal life on Greenworth Trade Street brought continuous inspiration. Zac could understand why so many cultivators chose to return to simplicity this way upon reaching bottlenecks in their cultivation. Zac put down his small carving upon realizing the two were coming over.
Smiling, he asked. āWould the two of you like to come in for a cup of tea?ā
āIām afraid we canāt. We have much to do today. We simply wanted to deliver the good news,ā Beene answered with a toothy grin.
āOh?ā
āIām getting married,ā Helisent said with a slight blush.
āMarried? Youāre just a child,ā Zac blurted.
āOnly you would think that, uncle. Iām twenty-four, nearly a spinster,ā Helisent laughed. āI sometimes wonder if youāre an old man in disguise.ā
Zac scratched his chin. She was technically right. Adding the years in this dreamworld and his time in spatial chambers, Zac could indeed be considered an old man by now.
āI know, I know. It still feels like yesterday you were running around the store clamoring for me to tell you stories,ā Zac laughed.
āWhere did the time go?ā Beene sighed in agreement.
Fifteen years, nearly sixteen if you counted the year time Zac spent traveling before renting the store at Greenworth. It was sometimes hard to take in so much time had passed. Well, his current form certainly helped. Time might not have left as strong a mark on him as on Beene, but the signs were undeniably there. Feeling death creep closer was both a novel and alarming experience for someone who should only have eons of lifespan remaining.
Zac pushed away the maudlin thoughts. āIs it that flustered chap you brought over the other day?ā
āPetryk, yes,ā Helisent smiled.
āItās a good boy. Earnest and hardworking,ā Beene said with a satisfied nod. āHeās got little in the way of close kin, so heās marrying into the family. Heāll help Helisent run things when Iām gone.ā
āYouāre talking like you got one foot in the grave since you sprained your ankle,ā Helisent rolled her eyes before turning back to Zac. āUncle, what about you? Youāre not getting younger, either. I know Jansa is interested. Sheās pretty and clever.ā
āIām in no hurry to get married. I still want to focus on my crafts,ā Zac rejected like he had many times before.
āWhat a waste. I thought you were getting ready to settle down now that youāve stopped running off every month,ā Helisent shook her head. āWell, let me know if you change your mind. If Jansa isnāt a candidate, I have a few friends whoād be willing. Your ripe old age is becoming an issue, but thatās nothing good looks and even better prospects canāt overcome.ā
āGo deal with your wedding, girl,ā Zac sighed.
āItās the next month,ā Helisent said. āIām expecting a nice carving as a present.ā
āFine, fine.ā
Zac remained in his rocking chair a while longer, watching the father and daughter go from door to door to announce the news and invite the neighbors to the celebration. It was only two weeks before he was part of the funerary procession for the Widow Misa down the street. Greenworth Trade Street was truly a microcosm of Life and Death.
Fifteen years, and still no way of escaping the illusion.
Zac had tried everything. Heād traveled far and wide in search of destiny, going far beyond the bounds of any memory domain heād visited. Zac had explored the capitals where E-grade cultivators were plentiful, learning that this patch of the shallows was called the Great Yan. Heād repeatedly ventured deep into the Whitmont Forest, nearly dying ten times over.
There was nothing. Apart from the occasional disturbance, Great Yan was like a world separated from the grand events of the Outer Courts and the Imperial Road. Most people in Whitfall hadnāt even heard of the Limitless Empire. They just lived their lives, following in the footsteps of their parents like Helisent. If escaping the illusion was tied to a specific event, then Zac had probably long missed it.
Zac eventually changed focus to restoring his cultivation. Outwardly, he had nothing to show for his efforts. His soul and Cosmic Core looked the same as when he stepped into Everitās shoes. They might even be worse, the pieces having settled in their broken state. If restoring his cultivation was possible after all these years, itād require treasures well out of reach of a mortal like him.
The Void and his other abilities were still out of reach. It had also proven impossible to work on the theoretical aspects of his cultivation. There were blueprints to be deduced and manuals to be improved. All that was impossible without a cultivatorās mind to crunch the millions of interdependent fractals and pathways. He had all the time in the world and no way to take advantage. Having his progress grind to a halt had left him incredibly frustrated.
Ironically, it was stopping and letting go that finally showed him a path forward.
Zac stepped into his store and locked the doors behind him before. He walked past the empty displays and entered the workshop in the back. Dozens of half-finished carvings and blocks of wood were lying around without any apparent order. Only the row of carefully maintained artisanal axes was arranged in neat order on his worktable.
Without giving it much thought, Zac picked up one of the half-finished sculptures. It showed the beginnings of a mountain range, but a mistake had left a blemish on the slope. Another artisan might think Zac had put the statue aside until he could envision another shape hidden in the wood. The truth was more mysterious.
Zac willed it, and the half-finished block suddenly transformed. No longer the outline of a mountain range, the carving had turned into two eastern dragons coiled in battle. It was nearly finished, and every part was chiseled with meticulous care. Each scale seemed to hold a world of meaning. One moment, the grappling beasts looked like avatars of War.
Their eyes radiated bone-chilling Killing Intent, and their claws were as sharp as divine swords. Some of the local hunters would probably be scared to death if they faced the stare unprepared. The next second, the oppressive feeling of carnage disappeared. The golden dragon had instead become a representation of Life, while his counterpart was the manifestation of Death.
Their battle represented the cycle of rebirth that stood at the center of his path, and the air trembled from the trapped spirituality. If placed next to the similar piece heād sold during Atwood Carvingsā opening, people would think Zac had been selling fakes all this time. Theyād be right in some way. Zac had always been careful about maintaining a reasonable level of spirituality in the pieces he sold to the public.
His statues had slightly improved over the years, but they still werenāt something that would attract E-grade cultivators. Meanwhile, even Hegemons would be able to find inspiration in the piece before him. Part of it could be explained by his craft advancing through ceaseless practice. However, the real reason was related to the mysteries of the Heart.
Everitās soul and core had been crippled, but heād held onto his Dao. Until Zac took over, heād never faltered in his search for a remedy. In some ways, Everitās Dao Heart had even grown stronger. Thereād obviously been some problems and obsessions in the depths of Everitās Heart before, and walking the mortal world helped temper his temper.
Zac didnāt know whether this trial was originally meant for him or Everit, and it didnāt really matter. The Heart was the key to reaching the Mercurial Court, and there were already some results. Zac had by no means become a Heart Cultivator. He couldnāt. Just like how Vilari needed Miasma despite being a mentalist, a Heart Cultivator still needed energy and a working soul.
Hiding his carvings couldnāt be considered a skill. It was only made possible by pouring Zac communicating his intention as he carved out the shapes. It affected the woodās spirituality, so it was more accurate to say it was the statueās ability rather than his. He was still a mortal with the same combat abilities as when he arrived.
Even this much was a comfort after years of setbacks. This wasnāt something he could do before, even if he poured his Daos and energies into his carvings. In fact, possessing all that power probably was a hindrance in pursuing this stage. How was one supposed to hear the woodās whisper over the churning roar of their cultivation?
Zac also had a feeling that this illusory world was more malleable than reality, which by itself was a clue. Right now, he could awaken a carving after a week of effort. A few years back, it took over a month.
Then again, Zac couldnāt stop even if he wanted to. His carvings were the only thing that kept him from being washed away. Spending years inside Everitās body with a complete set of his memories was different from briefly borrowing their identity. It was like Zacās soul was a transplanted organ being rejected by the body.
The rejection grew more intense by the year. It was still manageable, but there was no telling how long Zac would be stuck here. Seeing his slightly decelerated aging, Zac could probably live for another eighty years. By then, he would have spent nearly twice as long in this world as on the outside, and his real life would seem like a distant dream. Without a sturdy heart, how was he supposed to hold on?
Zac shook his head. He understood that this way of nurturing the Heart was different from following a Heart Nurturing Manual. Actively striving for progress was more likely to set you back. He needed to embrace the mortal Heart and comprehend Life and Death through it.
āMaybe this one is a bit much,ā Zac mused and put it down.
Possessing a wisp of spirituality, the statue could act as a guardian to Helisent and her family. Any intruder would be filled with unease upon drawing close. It wasnāt enough to deal with determined cultivators, but mortal robbers and assassins would lose most of their strength in its presence. However, his craft was far from perfect. It was fine if his Dao of Life occasionally leaked, but the other two could be harmfulāespecially when Helisent had a child.
āI guess Iām making a new one,ā Zac said as he walked over to the raw blocks in the back.
He was suddenly full of inspiration as he thought of the little girl who came over to play while her dad worked. Of the gangly adolescent who tried to help man his counter despite shaking in the presence of the rough-looking hunters. Of the young woman whoād become a capable merchant after years of hands-on experience, who now was about to enter the next chapter of her life.
Zac had given Helisent many pieces over the years, but this one needed to be special. His troubles faded into a distant murmur, replaced by compositions and ideas. A walnut-colored piece in the corner resonated with his current state, and Zacās smile widened. Heād eventually see the light so long as he kept walking forward with conviction and determination.
Even if a path didnāt exist, heād open one in his Heart.
----------------
The final routes were drawn, and the trembling mesh of pathways immediately stabilized. Exhaling, Zac brought the Skill Fractal into his body, where it settled in its old position. Successfully upgrading [Conformation of Supremacy] to Late Mastery meant having another combat form and another tool in his belt.
His gnawing anxiety made it hard to cherish the achievement. [Conformation of Supremacy] was quite a complex skill, and heād been forced to pour all his care and attention into the upgrade. Now that he was done, the unwelcome thoughts came creeping back stronger than ever. After all, his self-imposed deadline would arrive within the day.
Nearly a week had passed since receiving his Draugr halfās urgent message. There was no update and no other clues to draw from. Zac could normally get a hint of what his other half was up to, even while they were inside a memory. They still shared a Soul and Cosmic Core, so he could sense when his other side cultivated or fought.
Thereād been none of that since they embarked on the [Peregrine Gondola]. If his strength didnāt remain intact, Zac would have assumed heād truly entered another Temporal River. More likely, they were trapped in an extraordinarily powerful illusion. Understanding that didnāt change anything. It wasnāt like he could help in case something went wrong.
Reaching the Transformation Docks by foot would take him years, and Zac couldnāt rely on his experimental idea to immediately reach his other body. His Draugr side needed to be able to receive the [Fuxi Mountain Gate] for the plan to work. Zac sighed and got to his feet, turning toward the memory domain in the distance. It was too early to panic about his other half, and no news could even be considered good news.
That wasnāt the case on this side.
There was still no word from Ogras or Ventus and no signs of activity inside the domain. Unfortunately, this one was much like the Joyful Gardenās memory domain. An array or a Natural Formation hid its interiors. Zac didnāt want to enter, while the fate of his other half remained unknown. But as he told Esmeralda, he didnāt have much of a choice.
Having delayed this long was already pushing it, yet Zac spent the next five hours recovering his Mental Energy and optimizing his state. The clock would start the moment he stepped through, with Mox getting closer to pinpointing his location by the second. He needed to hit the ground running, or heād die before he could extract Ogras and implement his half-cooked plan.
A few hours before he planned on setting out, Zac suddenly sprung to his feet. The silence of the barren mountainside heād stayed shattered as a vibrant forest sprouted. It barely had time to cover the slopes in green before an enormous sphere of darkness swallowed all Life. Zac was blind when he emerged from a tree with axe in hand.
Zac didnāt try to break the domain, nor did he teleport away with [Apex Jungle]. He welcomed the familiar Abyssal darkness, a weight suddenly off his shoulders. Zac had only vaguely noticed someone drawing closer, only now realizing it was the one heād waited for so long. He still took out Katorās tracker when the Abyss retreated and his senses were restored.
āItās not broken. I didnāt bring mine,ā the familiar Draugr calmly said as she stepped into view.
āThen how did youāā
āFirst, Iād like you to explain where Arcaz UmbriāZi is and why you have Katorās Tracker.ā
The two faced each other in silence for a few moments before Zac exhaled.
āYou came at the right time. Letās talk before we set out. Things are a bit hectic on this end.ā
Tavza AnāAzol scrutinized Zac a few more seconds before nodding. āI expected nothing less, Chaosbringer.ā

Greenworth is the name of the town Robert Atwood died in btw. The name of the town Zac is from is being mention here. But I can't tell if its because the ocean is using knowledge from his mind to supplement this scenario and then converting it from Dreams/Fantasy/illusion into a real place. I guess we'll find out near the end of this arc.

2025-04-02 22:12:01 +0000 UTCHmm, chapter already laid it out heart and dao are the themes, seeing someone from young and energetic to grown and responsible to sickly then death is bound to give him insights and strengthen his comprehension of evolving life and sealed death and temper his heart, he might be a ruler but how much time has he actually spent living on earth, and i do mean just living minus all the worries and responsibilities⦠there should be some changes in his mind set after this⦠always good to see character development⦠and slowing down is always the way you achieve that.

2025-03-27 11:17:46 +0000 UTCRe-reading and thinking about this mini arc reminds me of the Star Trek Next Generation episode where Picard lives the entire adult life of a person on a dying planet, having a wife, and eventually kids and grandkids. Will the next time we see Draugr Zac be when he's on the brink of dying from old age?

2025-03-21 05:25:59 +0000 UTCI'm enjoying it. It is the only way for him to develop the artist side of himself. He was hardly going to improve his carvings in his normal ventures. And I think you are right in that it is all a test of conviction.

2025-03-19 18:56:11 +0000 UTCI bet thereās a good chance we see a chapter like that closer to the middle of the arc. Donāt we usually get worldly update chapters at the beginning of the second half of arcs?

2025-03-19 05:16:58 +0000 UTCI'm guessing the main challenge is to see if he still has the momentum or drive to continue on after living a full, peaceful life. The street being called Greenworth may be a trap to confuse his mortal home town with the street in the illusion. If he manages to hold on to his identity, path, and goals by the end of living a peaceful, fulfilling life, he'll probablybe able to break the illusion. It's also giving him the opportunity to relax, and digest his experiences and temper his heart. I don't know what I want more, to see the conclusion of his time on Greenworth St. Or the reunion with Tavza

2025-03-19 03:51:55 +0000 UTCI think the cycle of life and death he will see... Is Helisent going from a child, to a young adult, to a married woman, to a mother, to a grandmother, then passing. And then the cycle continues, as her daughter grows older. And round and round it goes.

2025-03-18 16:38:48 +0000 UTCSo, Zac hasn't become a Heart cultivator, but he's definitely becoming more in tune with his Heart and how it relates to the world. He's getting better at feeling that ineffable connection with things, and that helps him bring out the spirituality of the wood he's carving in accordance with his Daos. It seems like the solution here is going to be carving some kind of masterwork, sort of his own version of what Janos did when he was caught in his own dream. Except I doubt it will happen until toward the end of the eighty years he estimated for the body he's in. And that's going to be bittersweet since most (all?) of the people he currently knows in the village won't live that long. The big question, I think, is what his final work will be about. My guess is Helisent's life will influence it a lot one way or another. Right now she seems like his strongest connection in the village, and I don't see that changing.

2025-03-18 16:07:22 +0000 UTCThe illusion must be taking inspiration from Zac's memories since he is living on Greenworth St which is where he was living pre-integration. Also I think Janos said that Zac's boat was 1month. So if 1 week = 16 years then zach could potentially be stuck for 64 years

2025-03-18 08:50:17 +0000 UTCSuch a great way to put it. He has a loving touch when writing these kinds of chapters that both showcase his skill as an author and the depth of his world building. It makes these āslowerā chapters feel breezy, not āslowā. The story is moving along and not plodding, like one would assume.

2025-03-17 23:50:11 +0000 UTCIt would be funny if the only way out of the illusion is to die inside the illusion. I find this and last chapter interesting and good for world building. On earth every mortel can reach level 75 just by killing beast, pre system 20 is a lot.

2025-03-17 21:42:45 +0000 UTCThis went from an idyllic interlude to ācultivation stuff I canāt get a handle onā, but at least painted a path out. Then the POV handoff to HZac, which is what I needed. 2025-03-17 21:20:45 +0000 UTCThis is mortal arc is really cool, I'll admit to having been a bit skeptical when Zac split bodies originally but it's really allowed a unique narrative and story structure as multiple plotlines are pursued. TFTC as always!

2025-03-17 21:19:25 +0000 UTCIs 4 vs 1 against Mox so the odds are getting better. Now if any of Tavza minions survived they can improve their odds a little more and with Zac's half a plan and some improvisation chances are they gonna blow the memory lantern with Mox in it.

2025-03-17 19:58:45 +0000 UTCThis is a good sign. I was worried his draugr half's experience in the illusion was going to be an arc as long as the orom world's. A lot of important things for his cultivation happened there, but it was tough to get through. The slow / introspective chapters are nice for a week or two, but when it gets down to it I am here to see Zac fuck shit up.

2025-03-17 19:46:19 +0000 UTCSegments like this past chapter and a half are why I keep renewing my subscription. 2025-03-17 19:23:12 +0000 UTCOhhh, BOY, what a chapter. Zacs had a good 16 years to work on his craftsmanship; nice nice, and he's got a path to get out. Truly, this illusion is zacs next step towards upgrading his daos and even a breakthrough with his heart cultivation. Wonderful indeed. Welp, good thing conformation of supremacy is late stage now. That'll be a big Ole boost for what's to come. And now Tavza is here as well. I figured she and zacs human half would be the ones to meet, and I'm glad it happened. She's only interacted with his undead persona but never his human side, so I'm really looking forward to where Wednesdays chapter goes. Especially since she called him "chaos bringer," which means she may know zac and arcaz are one. Wonder what her reaction will be to kators' death. She likely won't be surprised. Tavza will be a big help against Mox too, once zac gets ahold of the literal chaos She's got running around in her body. Wonder how zac can use it; maybe against mox? Fuck man WEDNESDAY come ONNNNN

2025-03-17 19:16:05 +0000 UTCTFD talking about Zacās mortal heart and him using it to comprehend life and death might be one of my favorite links in the story. Zac is a cultivator and follow the rules of the jungle but it doesnāt change how compassionate he can be at times, what we mostly see is how his enemies view him.
