It is the closest to Jane Austen's book and she does have other great novels too: Sense and Sensibility (1811) Pride and Prejudice (1813) Mansfield Park (1814) Emma (1815) Northanger Abbey (1817) Persuasion (1817) Persuasion is my 2nd favorite story of Austen's behind P&P. The 1995 Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds version is my favorite of that book. It follows the book well.

2024-08-19 13:21:47 +0000 UTCIf you haven’t please try out Lost in Austen (BBC miniseries where a modern girl switches places with Lizzie- but the catch is that she knows the story and ends up just fucking everything up) and Austenland (Keri Russel spends all her money on a week long Austen immersion experience with lots of odd characters). It is the absolutely funniest, sweetest thing and has Jennifer Coolidge in one of my favourite roles of hers. I really think you’d love it. 2024-08-17 19:27:41 +0000 UTCI’m sure people have commented some of this… but Jane is very sweet & kind, but she’s not eager. People think she should have been a bit more overt in her adoration & attention of Mr Bingley (not saying I agree with that). You guys are the first people who seem to get Caroline in the 2005 version. She’s not nice, but she kind of has a bit of respect for Jane & especially Elizabeth. She also just has some great lines. But yes, here, her & her sister (Louisa, also married to the boorish drunk card player) are just generally mean. I think they’re over-compensating because they & their brother are NEW money, whereas Mr Darcy is very old blue blood money. They think they have to be really mean to anyone even remotely below them because they only recently found money (as a fam). They’re also from the North which has different associations than Southern England (where London, Brighton, etc are). I still don’t entirely understand all the English stereotypes & such when it comes to North & South, because honestly it can very by country or even area of London & I think it’s a “you have to live there awhile or study it” to get it. Mr Bingley does the opposite & is just happy & kind (granted he’s an heir & a man, & privileged) & I think generally happy that Mr Darcy counts him as a dear friend. Mr Darcy (for reasons) wants to project Mr Bingley. The novel & this 1995 version are A LOT & I’m still noticing things & learning things & I’ve viewed it… maybe yearly or so since it came out? Slightly unrelated, I think you guys would really like Emma or Sense & Sensibility more. Emma def, but S&S has a smaller main cast & I think you might like it more too. Austen stories are all dense, but S&S and Emma both have easier stories even when in a series. At most are usually 3 episodes unlike this P&P which is one of the longest Austen adaptations (beyond some of the even earlier BBC serials…. Which are truly more like televised plays & really only for the most ardent Austen admirers). Do watch Emma with Anya Taylor-Joy at least. It’s both period accurate & very very funny.

Those are filled with amazing costumes and cosplayers, music and dancing, and it opens yall up to a genre of books that are all over social media right now. Of course that is under assumption that you don’t already read that genre and are aware of those balls.

2024-08-12 00:27:09 +0000 UTCYes, there a few musical versions of Pride and Prejudice. My favorite is the one on Amazon Prime with Justin Mortelliti as Darcy and Mary Mattison as Lizzy. Rizzo, do you think you might try other stories by Jane Austin, or only want to see Pride and Prejudice. Pride and Prejudice was my favorite but not anymore. The songs are pretty good and Justin's voice is insane. There are some other really good stories by Austin and even Jane Eyre (a Bronte book) is a good time. I'm sure any of the Patrons can give you a good list if you do want to branch out....And just to be clear in regards to Mr. And Mrs. Bennet's relationship. Mr. Bennet married his wife only to realize she was way less inclined to think than he was. As a result, he doesn't really reapect her. (The reason Lizzie is his favorite is because of her lively mind.) So he gets his amusement out of winding his wife up. Case and point is when his wife asks him to contact Binglwy and he refuses. He had already paid the visit but let her think otherwise and get worked up. It's not really weaponized incompetence so much as toying with a creature with a lower level of intelligence. Not really malicious, but not respectful either

2024-08-09 19:19:31 +0000 UTCSoooo glad you're reacting to this!!! This is the best adaptation, imo. Mr. Bennett barely makes enough to be supporting the family as a gentleman with his tenants. They've long since spent Mrs. Bennett's dowry of $1,000. The Bennetts are certainly not poor and are of the privileged class just by nature of Mr. Bennett being a gentleman, but they're definitely on the low end of the spectrum. Nowhere near $2,000 a year. You can tell by the fact that the majority of their relations work for their livings. Bingley having $5,000 a year is like being a millionaire and Darcy having $10,000 a year is almost the equivalent to someone whose wealth is in the high millions. Colin Firth stars in my favorite film, A Single Man. It's a great queer film. He deserved the Oscar nomination he got for it. It's nothing like the book, but I couldn't care less.

That means that as soon as he's gone, the girls and mother are essentially homeless and broke. That's why the mother is so stressed about getting them married quickly, and hopefully to someone rich enough to be able to take care of her and any sisters who are still unmarried when the father passes. I could be wrong about this part, but entailments were done to keep generational wealth together and were passed down through the years. So it's not something Mr. Bennett set up himself and he can't change it.

2024-08-01 01:33:53 +0000 UTCYou have to understand Darcy has no genuine interest in Elizabeth at this point, he's just basically saying "she's hot" when he talked about her eyes etc. but he'd never consider courting or marrying her at this point. In the books he says the same things and Miss Bingley teases him endlessly about it which is quite amusing and in the book it says that as he is so indifferent to her teasing about it she knows he's not seriously interested in Elizabeth which reassures her.

I understand that in the movies they had to focus more intently on Darcy and Elizabeth but sometimes I feel like most people don't understand why certain things happened or why certain reactions occurred which this show does wonderfully. Also Benji, Bride & Prejudice isn't exactly a musical but does have awesome dance scenes. Definitely would recommend that adaptation next if you two are interested! P.S. The actor, Daniel Gillies (Elijah in Vampire Diaries) plays Wickham in Bride & Prejudice and one of his first acting roles!

So Darcy earns about 1 mil a year! It als9 explains why it was so impressive that Penelope earned that much as Lady Whistledown. And just how goddamn rich the bridgerton's are that Colin could withdraw double to payoff Cressida.

Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth were in a relationship during the filming. It was over by the time the it aired, but it was famously reported in the press at the time as an ‘affair’ which it wasn’t - they were both single when they got together. But basically the chemistry was real. Crispin Bonham-Carter (Mr Bingley) is cousins with Helena Bonham Carter (Room with a View, Harry Potter). Anna Chancellor (Miss Bingley) is a descendant of Jane Austen. In order of age it’s Jane, Lizzie, Mary, Kitty, Lydia Jennifer Ehle’s mother is Rosemary Harris who played Aunt May in the Toby Maguire Spiderman films. Jennifer Ehle won a BAFTA for her Lizzie Bennet. In terms of Mr Darcy and Mr Bingley’s wealth, it’s simplistic but you can think of Mr Darcy as an old money billionaire, and Mr Bingley as a new money (e.g. internet startup) millionaire. The kids at the gathering you mentioned are there because it’s essentially a private family gathering, not a public ball or larger invite-only event that only those who were out in society would attend.
