If you’ve never watched it before Bridget Jones’ Diary is a modern very loose retelling of pride and prejudice with Colin Firth returning as Mr Darcy. Kind of how Clueless is Emma.

You missed the whole conversation like you missed almost everything in this show. This is probably the first time i'm so frustrated with one of your reactions but it was really annoying, sorry.

2024-09-04 10:08:36 +0000 UTClol i like the 1995 version most because it's more cozy and silly and wry, which feels very true to jane austen's voice. additionally, it's nice to have a version where people are kinda normal looking. like, jane can be beautiful without being modern supermodel hot, y'know? and then the 2005 version really fucks with my body image tbh. a lot of media from that time does, but it really irks me when the regency period was all about curvy bodies and heaving bosoms. that's part of the reason i can't stand the discourse around nicola coghlin's body in the latest bridgerton series either, in the period her body type would have been extremely fashionable.

2024-09-02 12:05:01 +0000 UTCso, the dowry is money that is intended for any children resulting from the marriage no matter what happens with the husband's income. the reason each of the bennet sisters will still have £1000 when mr. bennet dies despite not being entitled to his estate is because mrs. bennet came into the marriage with £5000. each daughter essentially has an investment portfolio with that money and they would be expected to live off the interest, as mr. collins says 'in the 4 percents.' that means each bennet daughter can expect an income of £40/year, or about the average annual take home of a coal miner in that time. the interest is supposed to help pay for the wife's upkeep in the marriage as well. it was understood that men would give their wives something called 'pin money' as an allowance to keep them in fashion befitting their station, but if she wanted to buy something without asking her husband, she could use the interest from her dowry. so the more money a woman brings into the marriage through her dowry, the less she needs to rely on her husband's income. since the married couple became one entity under the law, a dowry was also a way to make sure that the woman had access to money that the husband couldn't touch. the investment account arrangement meant that he couldn't just withdraw money for his own purposes.

It takes place after the original story so you wouldn’t just be rewatching the original plot

I love "Pride and Prejudice" and many of the adaptations, but the idea of being trapped in the actual novel is my literal nightmare. The mini-series is fun, and I enjoy it as it's own thing.

It's a three part mini series set 6 years after the end on P&P. Lizzie and Darcy have to solve a murder mystery. It's actually pretty well done.

(Also, Bend it Like Beckham is so iconic 😻🏳️🌈) Really glad you enjoyed & saw the value in this version. I pretty much like them equally for different reasons . The 2005 is stylistically gorgeous, the cast do such a good job playing the characters slightly differently / uniquely but still in character, & I really like that the Bennet family (though maybe a bit poker) have more “awe they all really do love one another” moments.

2024-08-20 07:39:23 +0000 UTCYou should watch Austenland! It's less a spoof of P&P and more pokes fun at Jane Austen fans/is a loose re-imagining of the story. But the cast is great and frankly they just let Jennifer Coolidge run wild with ad-libs and it's pretty incredible.

2024-08-20 00:32:11 +0000 UTCSo, you gotta remember that in this time period, before there were things like social security to cover parents when they got older and infirm, kids were 100% expected to let their parents move in with them when the time came. The parents paying dowries and what not, in this culture at least, would be an investment in their future elderly care. Some countries still have it like this today where the family name and inheritance doesn't go through the daughters, but the parents are still looked after by their married children with money.

If you want to continue your Pride and Prejudice saga, you must watch the 1940 version, it's the ultimate of demure lol. Not very accurate, but a sweet little tidbit of a movie. They reused costumes from Gone With the Wind, it's quite funny. Lost in Austen is a good one, very funny!!

2024-08-18 22:50:47 +0000 UTCAlso I’m 42 and work with all 16-25 year olds & I cannot stop referring to everything as “very demure, very cutesy” at work and frankly they are ready to murder me. 🤣 Especially given that we work in a nursing home & there’s only so many times you can say “do you see how I answered that call light immediately instead of waiting for someone else to do it? Very demure. Very mindful” before someone takes you out.

I also think Mr Collin’s should be played by a muppet

2024-08-18 18:31:12 +0000 UTCHaven’t had time to check out the reaction yet (I’m on ep 5 at the moment), but just dropping in to say that if you want a complete react-a-thon for adaptations of P&P then you need to watch ”the Lizzie Bennet Diaries” on YouTube. It’s a modern day adaptation, with the framing device being that Lizzie decides to make videos documenting her life. When it first premiered there were actually people who thought it was a real person making vids about herself, and not an adaptation. It has 100 episodes, but most of them are around 3-8 minutes or so (watching the entire thing apparently clocks in around 8 hours).

Also I am one of the people who just can't decide which version is my favourite because each version has something and I love them both so much. Also I love the web series the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, it is like youtube vlog of Lizzie and it is realy fun and really good adaptation in modern age. But alos the format is not good for reacting but if you loved 2005 and 1995 version I think you would like it. Also your reaction to lady Catherine de Bourgh was hilarious.

Anyway, Sense and sensibility is significantly more focused on finances and how that affects romantic relationships. The 95 version with Kate wins let and Emma Thompson is very well done.

If you are interested, here is a video that clarifies the economic aspects of marriage at that time: https://youtu.be/o0vYtSf2iP8?feature=shared My understanding of dowries for women and income for men is that they both had to bring money to the table to live off of. Being a gentleman at that time basically meant that you did not work for a living, If a job was required, such as in the case of younger sons, there were only a few careers that could be had while maintaining the status of gentleman - i think military and clergy were the primary ones. I believe they also mentioned the four percents at some point in this show - aka income invested in bonds or something like that, which generally paid out 4% Per annum.
